Frequently Asked Questions
Direct thermal printers use heat-sensitive paper that darkens when it passes under a heated printhead. Thermal transfer printers use a heated printhead to melt wax, wax/resin, or full resin ribbon onto standard paper or synthetic labels.
Choose thermal transfer if your labels need to last longer than six months, endure harsh environments, or remain readable under sunlight, heat, and chemical exposure.
Direct thermal labels are slightly more expensive than thermal transfer labels. However, they require no ink, toner, or ribbons. With that said, thermal labels can be more cost-effective long-term for durable applications because the labels do not fade and require fewer reprints.
- Select Labels wound on a roll if you use automated labeling machinery, need a compact footprint, or require unique custom label shapes and tough synthetic materials.
- Select Fanfold Stacks if you are running a high-volume manual fulfillment center (like printing 4×6 shipping labels), want to minimize printer reloads, and need labels to lie completely flat
